Joe Shumard
Joseph S. Shumard (1952–2020) established our organization in 2018 to raise support for quality George Washington events and programs to a higher level.
Joe was one of the best-known supporters of Alexandria's events regarding George Washington, and tireless supporters of many of the city's institutions. For years, he was the driving force on the City’s George Washington Birthday Celebration Committee, and he also provided important support to the Friendship Firehouse, the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, First Night Alexandria, Spring for Alexandria, and many others. His spirit of volunteerism was an inspiration for many others to also give of their time and talents for the common good.
In 2012, he was named a Living Legend of Alexandria in recognition of his lifetime of service to the community.
In 2017, Joe was honored with the George Washington Memorial Award by the President of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial Association.
Today, the George Washington Legacy Foundation carries his dream forward. Since his passing in 2020, his leadership has been missed—but the Foundation aims to perpetuate his dream and vision.
